Matcha vs. Green Tea - which to choose and what's the difference?
Green tea has been a symbol of balance, lightness, and body care for centuries. In recent years, however, matcha has become a star – from a traditional Japanese ceremony to a modern latte in urban cafes.
But what exactly is the difference between matcha and green tea? And which one is more suitable for you?
In this article, we will look at:
✔️ How they are produced
✔️ Differences in composition and effect
✔️ When to choose matcha and when classic green tea
✔️ Which is more suitable for daily use
What is green tea?
Green tea is made from the leaves of Camellia sinensis, which are not fermented, but processed by steaming or roasting to preserve their fresh green color and high antioxidant content.
After drying, the leaves remain whole or broken and are infused in water, after which they are removed.
Key characteristics:
-
Light and fresh taste
-
Contains caffeine (less than coffee)
-
Rich in antioxidants
-
Suitable for daily consumption
What is matcha?
Matcha is also a green tea, but the difference starts with its cultivation.
In the last weeks before harvesting, the plants are shaded, which increases the chlorophyll and L-theanine content. The leaves are then dried and ground into a fine powder.
With matcha, we consume the entire leaf, not just the infusion.
Matcha vs. green tea – key differences
1️⃣ Method of consumption
-
Green tea – infused and leaves discarded
-
Matcha – dissolved in water and the entire powder is consumed
➡️ This means a higher concentration of nutrients in matcha.
2️⃣ Caffeine content
Matcha contains more caffeine than standard green tea, but thanks to L-theanine, the effect is more balanced and prolonged.
-
Green tea – light and smooth boost
-
Matcha – stronger but calm focus
If you are looking for an alternative to coffee without sharp peaks – matcha is an excellent choice.
3️⃣ Taste
-
Green tea – fresh, grassy, sometimes slightly bitter
-
Matcha – creamy, rich, slightly sweet with umami notes
Matcha is also often used for:
-
matcha latte
-
desserts
-
smoothies
4️⃣ Antioxidants
Matcha contains significantly more antioxidants because we consume the entire leaf.
Green tea is also extremely rich in catechins, but the concentration is lower.
