Licorice, or as it is also known, Licorice, is a plant of the Fabaceae family that originates from Southern Europe and Asia. It is grown for its roots. As its name suggests, licorice has a sweet taste, which is due to its high content of glycyrrhizin - a compound with a sweetness up to 50 times greater than that of sugar. However, its taste is more reminiscent of fennel and anise than of sugar. Licorice is used in desserts, drinks and some dishes. It is believed to have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects and aids digestion.
Method of use:
Make licorice tea by pouring 1 tsp of the herb into a cup of boiling water. Let steep for 5 minutes, strain, and serve. It pairs well with mint, ginger, anise, and other herbs.
You can also make licorice syrup to use to sweeten and flavor ice creams, pastries, and sauces.
Caution: If you suffer from high blood pressure or kidney problems, consult a doctor before taking licorice. Daily use of the herb is not recommended. Contraindicated for pregnant women.
