Mate is a caffeinated national drink that originates mainly from Paraguay, southern Brazil and Argentina. Slightly smoky, spicy and tart with lovely notes of fruit, the taste is reminiscent of strong green tea. The tea is made from the green leaves of a type of Brazilian grass. For this reason, mate tea is also called the “drink of the gods” or the “green gold of the Indians”.
