India: the birthplace of strong and spicy tea
India is the seventh largest country in the world by area and borders Pakistan, China, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar (formerly Burma), and Bangladesh.
Tea cultivation in India began in the early 18th century when British colonists introduced the plant to the country. Today, India is one of the world's largest tea producers, producing a third of the world's output.
The first tea plantations in India were established in the Assam region, where the mild, tropical climate proved ideal for growing strong, spicy teas. Today, Assam is one of the most famous tea-producing regions in the world. Other famous Indian teas include Darjeeling, Nilgiri, and Kashmir.
