Rooibos – The African Tea
Rooibos comes from a shrub that grows exclusively in South Africa. Its leaves are needle-shaped, light green in color with small yellow flowers in spring.
Rooibos is also called red tea because of its color after oxidation. Theine-free, it has a calming effect and is distinguished by its slightly sweet taste.
Once harvested, the rooibos is cut into small pieces – needles and twigs, which are arranged and sprinkled with water, which begins the oxidation and changes its color to brown-red. The rooibos is then spread out in the sun in a thin layer to dry. It is sieved and then lightly steamed. Rooibos is consumed pure or with milk, like black tea.
As with tea, rooibos is prepared in a specific way, paying attention to water, quantity, temperature, and extraction time.
Use filtered or bottled water without many minerals. The water is heated to 90°C. Calculate 3 g per 200 ml. As for the time, depending on how strong you want the rooibos to be, you can leave it for 5 to 10 minutes.
Rooibos has been used for centuries by indigenous peoples for its medicinal properties. Rich in antioxidants, rooibos helps with digestion, allergies, and sleep. It is definitely the best drink for the evening, helping the body to calm down and prepare for sleep.
